The University of Nottingham has hosted a three-day programme designed to encourage more young women to consider studying Computer Science and pursuing careers in technology.
Held from at the university’s School of Computer Science on its Jubilee Campus, the Levelling Up: Computer Science event brought together Year 12 students from The Nottingham Emmanuel School, NUAST, Toot Hill School and Trent College. Undergraduate students and university staff delivered practical workshops covering Artificial Intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, creative coding and data science, alongside information about studying the subject at university.
Participants also toured the campus, met current students and learned about their experiences of studying at the University of Nottingham.
The initiative forms part of the national Levelling Up Computer Science programme, which aims to increase participation in the subject among groups that are traditionally underrepresented.
Marjahan Begum, Assistant Professor in Computer Science, said: “If we want to broaden participation in computing, we need to showcase the hands-on problem-solving, creativity and interdisciplinary thinking that lie at the heart of computer science. Sessions led by role models, such as our student ambassadors, are also vital in helping young people see themselves in the field and consider it as a future career.”
