Colorado State University launches IT alignment initiative

Colorado State University is launching a university-wide IT alignment initiative designed to improve technology services, strengthen cybersecurity and create the foundations for scaling Artificial Intelligence across the institution.

Colorado State University is launching a new IT Alignment initiative aimed at creating a more co-ordinated, secure and sustainable technology operating model across the institution.

Beginning in August 2026, the programme will bring IT functions across the University into closer alignment, with a focus on improving services, reducing duplication and making more efficient use of technology resources and costs.

The initiative follows a request from University President Amy Parsons and builds on the alignment of Colorado State University’s Pueblo, Spur and Fort Collins operations in 2023, as well as a cybersecurity alignment programme completed during the past year.

Brandon Bernier, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, Colorado State University, said: “This work is about bringing our IT community together in a way that builds on the strengths and technology expertise that already exists across our campus.

“Our goal is to create a more coordinated, secure and sustainable technology operating model that better supports the university’s teaching, research, outreach and administrative missions.”

The University has identified several priorities for the programme, including delivering more consistent technology services across departments, reducing duplication, improving co-ordination between IT functions and strengthening cybersecurity and compliance.

The initiative will also establish an organisational foundation for expanding AI and other emerging technologies across the University.

Rather than announcing immediate organisational changes, the initial Discovery phase will examine CSU’s existing technology services, capabilities and challenges and identify potential areas for improvement.

“Successful change depends on engaging the people doing the work every day,” said Bernier. “We are committed to creating opportunities for meaningful involvement and ensuring our campus stakeholders help shape the future of technology services at CSU.”

The programme will progress through four phases: Discovery, Design, Transition and Implementation, with representatives from across CSU’s IT community participating through advisory groups and other stakeholder engagement.

Colorado State University is working with consulting firm MOR Associates on the initiative. Following the initial data-gathering and validation process, MOR Associates will facilitate workshops with IT stakeholders to assess potential future operating models and develop recommendations.

A separate alignment programme is taking place within the University’s Division of University Marketing and Communications. Although the two programmes will remain independently led, the teams will share resources and best practices where appropriate and align timelines and terminology to reduce duplication and confusion.
