Houston Independent School District expands teacher access to ChatGPT

Houston Independent School District is among 55 US school systems adopting ChatGPT for Teachers as educators explore how Artificial Intelligence can support teaching and reduce administrative workloads.

Houston Independent School District (HISD) is expanding access to Artificial Intelligence tools for its educators through the adoption of OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers.

The Texas school district is among 55 school systems across 20 US states joining the latest expansion of the programme, which will provide ChatGPT access to more than 100,000 additional teachers and staff.

HISD’s approach focuses on identifying specific challenges where AI could support educators rather than introducing the technology simply because it is available.

Christine Mai, Director of Innovation and AI Initiatives Lead at Houston Independent School District, said: “At Houston ISD, our AI work starts with a simple question: what is the right problem to solve? The goal is not to use AI just because it’s new but instead to understand the opportunity these tools present.”

Teachers can use ChatGPT for tasks including developing lesson plans, adapting learning materials for different student requirements, preparing communications for families and reducing administrative workloads.

The initiative also provides HISD with administrative controls designed for education environments. Data entered into ChatGPT for Teachers workspaces is not used to train OpenAI’s models by default.

HISD joins districts including Baltimore City Public Schools, Sarasota County Schools, Wichita Public Schools and Virginia Beach City Public Schools in the latest expansion.

OpenAI is now working with more than 100 K–12 organisations across 30 states, providing free access and training to more than 300,000 educators and staff. ChatGPT for Teachers is available free to verified US K–12 educators until June 2028.
