Morgan State University launches AI degree programme

Morgan State University is expanding its technology education portfolio with the launch of a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, as the institution responds to growing demand for graduates with advanced AI skills across multiple industries.

The new undergraduate degree, which will welcome its first students this autumn, has been approved by both the Morgan State University Board of Regents and the Maryland Higher Education Commission. It replaces the university’s previous Bachelor of Science in Cloud Computing, shifting the focus towards Artificial Intelligence as organisations increasingly adopt intelligent technologies.

Offered through the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, the programme has been designed to prepare students to develop, deploy and manage AI systems responsibly while meeting evolving workforce requirements.

Students will study topics including AI models, intelligent agents, AI-driven cybersecurity, Machine Learning, cloud computing applications and quantum Machine Learning. The curriculum also provides a foundation in programming, mathematics, data science and computational theory, alongside project-based learning, undergraduate research and practical industry-focused experience.

Shuangbao Wang, Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science, said: “Artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed the direction of computing.

“Rather than simply updating an existing curriculum, we reinvented the entire programme to ensure students graduate with the knowledge and experience required to lead in an AI-first world. Our emphasis on project-based learning, undergraduate research and ethical AI development prepares graduates not only to use intelligent technologies but to create them responsibly.”

The launch builds on Morgan State’s existing portfolio of 18 Artificial Intelligence courses, bringing them together within a dedicated undergraduate programme that also includes reinforcement learning, agentic AI for cyberthreat detection and analysis, natural language processing and quantum Machine Learning.

Paul B. Tchounwou, University Distinguished Professor and Dean of the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, said: “The launch of this new degree programme underscores Morgan’s commitment to aligning academic excellence with the technologies and industries shaping tomorrow’s workforce.

“As AI continues to transform scientific discovery, healthcare, business, government and virtually every other aspect of society, our students must graduate with the technical expertise, critical thinking skills and ethical foundation needed to become innovators, researchers and leaders in this transformative era.”
